The Johnson Family  ·  Hocking Hills, Ohio

This Land Is Home.
We're Glad You're Here.

We didn't discover Hocking Hills — we grew up in it. We raised our family here, walked every trail, and learned over time that the best thing you can do with a place this beautiful is share it.

We Live Here. Really.

A lot of vacation properties are owned by people who visit occasionally and manage remotely. That's not us. We live on this land. We walk these trails with our kids, watch the deer move through the fields in the morning, and sit by the same firepits we invite you to use every weekend. When guests arrive at a Johnson Hillside cabin, they're not checking into a rental — they're guests on land that somebody genuinely loves.

That changes everything about how we do this. The attention to detail, the care put into the properties, the pride we take in every single review — it comes from a simple place: this is ours, and we want you to feel that.

The Johnson Family
Who We Are

The Johnsons of Hocking Hills

A large family. A lot of love. One shared mission.

Johnson Hillside Cabins is exactly what it sounds like: a family business, run by the Johnson family, on land the Johnsons call home. We're a big family — and we operate like one. That means everyone has a role, everyone contributes, and the pride you feel in a well-run family operation runs through everything we do here.

We were raised in southeastern Ohio. Our kids are being raised here too. Hocking Hills isn't a destination we discovered — it's the backyard we've always had, and the community we've always been part of. We know the trails, the back roads, the best time to catch Cedar Falls after a rain, and which gorge is still quiet on a Saturday morning when the others are crowded.

When you book with us, you're not booking through a platform and hoping for the best. You're dealing with the people who built this, who care about it, and who will personally be disappointed if your experience is anything less than great.

We get a genuine sense of accomplishment every time guests leave happy. That feeling never gets old — and it's the whole reason we do this.

50 Acres, Every Tree Accounted For
Our Connection to the Land

Lifetime Locals. Deep Roots.

We haven't just visited every trail in Hocking Hills — we know them by heart.

There's a difference between knowing a place and having a relationship with it. We have a relationship with Hocking Hills. We've walked every trail, explored every gorge, and built the kind of quiet familiarity with this landscape that only comes from spending your whole life in it.

We've touched every tree on our land. That's not a figure of speech. We know where the deer bed down in the winter, where the foxes run at dusk, and which corner of the property catches the best light on a fall morning. We know because we pay attention — and because this land matters to us in a way that doesn't require explaining to anyone who's walked it.

That knowledge is yours when you stay with us. We'll tell you which trail to take first, which gorge is still quiet when the others aren't, and when to set your alarm if you want the mist to still be sitting in the valley when you step outside. The local advantage is real — and we share it freely.

We raised our families here. Our kids have grown up knowing the names of the goats, chasing fireflies in the same fields you'll walk through, and developing the same deep appreciation for southeastern Ohio that we were raised with. That continuity — generational, rooted, genuine — is what Johnson Hillside Cabins is built on.

The Animals

Ashley, Rumpke,
and How a Farm Happens

It starts with kids who want animals. It ends with a genuine farm.

It started the way these things usually do: kids wanting animals. We wanted to give them the farm experience — real animals, real responsibility, real mornings collecting eggs before breakfast. What we didn't fully plan for was how completely that would take hold.

The farm grew into something real. Goats with names and personalities. Ducks with opinions. Chickens who hold a grudge. Farm-fresh eggs that became part of the daily routine. And somewhere along the way, we stopped thinking of it as a feature of the property and started thinking of it as just... home.

The kind of encounter other visitors pay extra for somewhere else — at Bigfoot Bungalow, it's just what morning looks like.

And then there's Ashley.

Ashley is a true animal person — the kind who notices when something's wrong before anyone else does, who will rearrange her entire day around an animal that needs care. She's been that way her whole life. When Rumpke — our raccoon — came to us in need of care, Ashley was the one who brought her back. She nursed her through, kept her comfortable, and gave her the patient, attentive love that Rumpke has trusted ever since.

Rumpke is Ashley's. The bond is visible and real. She's nocturnal, she doesn't perform on command, and she may or may not make an appearance during your stay. But knowing she's out there, living her best life on this property because of Ashley's care — that's the kind of story that makes this place feel like more than a cabin rental.

Animals and wildlife make the experience more meaningful, we think. We live it every day. We want to share it with you.

What We Believe

🏡

Quality Over Profit, Every Time

We believe that if you provide a great experience at a fair price, the rest takes care of itself. That's not idealism — it's how we've built this business, and it's how we plan to keep running it.

🌿

Hocking Hills Belongs to Everyone

A lot of cabins in this region are priced like private estates. We made a deliberate choice to go a different direction — because we're locals, and we believe that access to a place this beautiful shouldn't require a second mortgage.

We Earn Every Review

Our ratings mean everything to us — not because they're marketing, but because they're feedback. A 5-star review means we delivered what we promised. Anything less means we have work to do. We take both seriously.

Our Pricing Philosophy

Fair Is a Strategy, Not a Compromise

We built something worth paying for. Then we priced it like it was meant to be used.

When you look at cabin rentals in Hocking Hills, you'll notice a pattern: the prices are high. There are reasons for that, and some of them are legitimate. But as lifetime locals who know what this land and this region is actually worth — and what a reasonable experience should cost — we made a different choice.

We want everyone to be able to afford a great experience here. Not just the guests who can absorb a $700-a-night rate. Not just the ones booking months ahead on an unlimited budget. Families, groups of friends, couples celebrating something real — all of them deserve access to the gorges, the trails, and a cabin where everything works the way it should.

So we priced it fairly. And then we made sure the experience backed it up.

We want to earn every dollar you spend with us. Not collect it — earn it. That means clean properties, responsive communication, amenities that actually work, and the kind of local knowledge that makes your stay better than it would have been anywhere else. If you leave feeling like you got more than you paid for, we've done our job.

Our mindset is simple: exceptional quality at a fair price is a sustainable business. Everything else is a gamble.

What Guests Say

The Reviews We're Most Proud Of

★★★★★

"You can tell this property is genuinely loved. Everything was spotless, thoughtful, and better than the photos. The animals were a total surprise — my kids are still talking about the goats two weeks later."

Guest Review
★★★★★

"We almost didn't book because we've been burned by other Hocking Hills cabins that look great in photos and disappoint in person. This was the opposite. Genuinely worth every penny — and there weren't many pennies required."

Guest Review
★★★★★

"The hosts are incredible — responsive, warm, and you can tell they actually care. This isn't a business running on autopilot. These people put their hearts into it and it shows in every single detail."

The People Behind It

The Johnson Family

And the people who've become part of it.

Johnson Hillside Cabins is a family operation in the truest sense — built by the Johnsons, run by the Johnsons, and carried forward by the next generation of Johnsons who are growing up on this land the same way we did. But no family business of this size runs on family alone. We have people who help make this work — and they don't feel like vendors or contractors to us. They feel like extended family. We're grateful for every one of them.

What's Coming Next
Where This Is Going

More Cabins. More Experiences. Same Family.

We're building something with staying power.

Johnson Hillside Cabins is not at its final form. We're actively building — adding properties, refining experiences, and expanding what we're able to offer to the guests who trust us with their vacation time.

Harden Hideaway — our third cabin — is in development now, with a planned opening in summer 2026. We're not sharing details until we're ready to deliver on them, but we'll say this: it'll reflect the same values that built the first two.

Beyond the new cabin, we're thinking about what Johnson Hillside Cabins looks like over the long term — as a brand, as an institution in this community, and as a legacy that our kids might one day run the way we run it now. We're lifetime locals. This isn't a business we plan to sell or scale beyond recognition. It's something we're building to last.

Our commitment, as we grow, is that nothing changes about what matters: great properties, honest pricing, and people who genuinely care about your experience. As long as we can hold that line, we plan to keep growing.

We're grateful you're part of the story — wherever it goes from here.
